The War Eagles defeat the Wolverwines in the 2011 Forsyth County Cup
The 2011 Forsyth County Cup belongs to the South Forsyth High School Varsity Women’s Lacrosse team. The War Eagles defeated the Wolverwines, by one goal, ending the game 8-7 in the Forsyth County Cup Tournament. West Forsyth hosted the event.
“We’re all really excited,” said SFHS Variety Lacrosse Coach Katie Richelt in an interview with Cumming Patch. “I definitely feel as though we played as a team. That was our goal this weekend--to come together, depend on one another, and I think that was one of the things that really lead us to the victories,” she said.
A recap of the weekend games began with four teams participating in the championship series. Friday’s opening games pitted South against Lambert, ending with South defeating Lambert 10-8 in overtime with two goals.
“It was a nail biter to say the least,” said Richelt.
Following that game, West and North Forsyth played each other with West winning 18-9.
On Saturday a varsity consolation game was played between the two defeated teams, Lambert Longhorns and North Forsyth Raiders. The Longhorns won that game over the Raiders 19-9.
Finally the championship game between the two remaining teams (South and West) vying for the cup, but only one team bringing home the trophy.
The South Forsyth War Eagles was that team.
“They worked very hard and in both games had very tough competitors and really had to fight to the very end--you know for both wins--so it’s exciting, we’re really proud of them,” Richelt said.
One of the reasons why there is a Forsyth County Cup Championship, according to Richelt, is to encourage more girls to play lacrosse within the county.
“This is just another attempt to make a special weekend for the girls and to just have a tournament,” added Richelt. “It gets them excited and gets more players involved.”
